판소리는 한 사람의 소리꾼(唱者)이 고수(鼓手)의 북 반주에 맞춰 극적(劇的)으로 구성된 긴 이야기를 "소리"(歌)와 "아니리"(말)와 "발림"(몸짓)을 통해 전달하는 우리나라 고유의 전통공연예술이다. 특히, 우리 역사와 희로애락을 함께해온 전통 문화의 정수로 그 독창성과 우수성을 세계적으로 인정받아 2003년 유네스코 『인류구전 및 무형유산 걸작』에 선정되었다. 판소리는 ‘판’이란 말과 ‘소리’라는 말이 혼합되어 이루어진 말로, 판이란 말은 ‘사람들이 모인자리’를 통칭하며, 소리라는 말은 노래를 통칭하는 예스러운 표현이다. 따라서 판소리는 사람들이 모인 자리에서 소리하는 것으로 바꾸어 말할 수 있다. 순조 때 윤달선(尹達善)의『광한루악부』(廣寒樓樂府)에는 판소리를 다음과 같이 말하고 있다. '창우희(倡優戱)는 한 사람은 서고 한 사람은 앉아서(一人立一人坐), 선 사람은 소리를 하고 앉은 사람은 북을 쳐서 박을 짚는데(而立者唱 坐者以鼓節之), 잡가 12곡으로 이루어진다(凡雜歌十二腔)' 학자들에 따라 판소리에 대한 장르 구분을 ‘사설, 서사시, 희곡, 음악’ 등 다양한 관점으로 이야기하는데, 이는 문학과 연극, 음악적 요소를 고루 갖춘 판소리의 종합예술적인 면모 때문이다. 한편, 판소리는 한 사람이 모든 배역의 역할을 담당하기 때문에 표현하는 음역의 폭이 넓고 성음의 변화에도 능해야 한다. 또한 고수는 무율 타악기인 북으로 장단과 추임새에만 의존해 반주하기 때문에 같은 장단이라고 하더라도 창자의 소리에 따라 다양하고도 적합한 가락(변채가락)을 순간순간 선택해 연주하는 능력이 있어야 한다.

 

 

 

 

 

"Pansori" is a traditional performing art performed by a singer and a drummer. The singer does not simply sing a song, but, rather, delivers a story with narratives and gestures with live drum accompaniment. In particular, the uniqueness and prominence of "pansori", a core of traditional Korean music, that has been transmitted through Korean history with Koreans' joys and sorrows, have been recognized worldwide, so that "pansori" was selected by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage in the domain of oral expressions and traditions in 2003.   "Pansori" is comprised of "pan" and "sori". "Pan" meant "a place where people gather", and "sori" meant, generally, "songs" in old times. Therefore, "pansori" can be said to be songs are sung in gatherings.

 

Scholars insist that "pansori" belongs to different genres including narratives, epic poetry, play, or music because of their different points of view. It is mainly because "pansori" has many different aspects of a composite art such as literature, play, and music.

In the meantime, the singer in "pansori" plays all the characters for a story, so the singer must be good at changing voices with a voice of great compass. The drummer in "pansori" plays the accompaniment of rhythms with a no-tone drum called "buk" in Korean and adds encouraging words in-between. So the drummer must have an ability of selecting and changing rhythms every minute that are perfect for the singer's voice.
