민요(民謠)는 한 겨레의 인정, 풍속, 생활 감정 따위를 나타내어 민간에 전하여 오는 순박한 노래로 민중 가운데 생성되고 향유되며 전승되어 온 노래이다.

민요는 특별할 재주나 기교가 없이도 이 땅의 사람이라면 누구라도 만들고 부를 수 있었으며, 그것을 즐기는데도 특별한 격식이 필요한 것이 아니었다. 민요는 집단적 익명성을 바탕으로 생성 유지되어 온 민(民)의 노래(謠)인 것이다.

우리 민요는 대략 200여종이 되며 거의 대부분이 노동요로 구성되어 있는것이 특징이다. 논농사는 무엇보다도 많은 노동력을 필요로 하기 때문에 서로의 호흡을 맞추고 노동의 능률을 올리기 위해 많은 노동요가 불리어지게 되었다.
특히, 서부 평야지역을 중심으로 수많은 도작농업 노동요가 불려져 왔으며, 해안과 도서지역을 중심으로 어업 노동요, 그리고 동부 산악지역을 중심으로 답작 노동요가 불리어 졌다.

민요는 민요의 성격에 따라 토속민요와 통속민요로 구분하며, 지역 혹은 음악적 특징에 따라 경기민요(서울·경기), 서도민요(황해도·평안도), 동부민요(경상도·강원도·함경도), 남도민요(전라도), 제주도민요로 구분된다. 또한 민요의 기능에 따라 노동요, 의식요, 유희요로 구분되기도 하고, 향유 계층에 따라 성인요, 부녀요, 아동요 등으로 구분될 수도 있다.

※ 민요는 발생 시기, 전파의 범위, 세련도, 전창자의 신분 등의 기준에 따라 토속민요와 통속 민요로 나눈다.

- 토속민요
토속민요는 비교적 발생 시기가 오래 되었으며, 좁은 지역에서 불리우고, 소박 단순하고, 토속민들에 의해 자생적으로 성장하여 전창되어 온 소리이다. 농부가, 김매는 소리, 그물 당기는 소리, 가래소리, 상여소리, 지경다지기소리 등이 토속민요에 속한다.

- 통속민요
통속민요는 비교적 발생 시기가 가깝고, 넓은 지역에서 불리우며, 예술적이고 기교적이며, 본래 전문 예능인들에 의해 만들어지고 불리우다가 일반에 널리 퍼진 소리이다. 보렴, 화초사거리, 닐리리야, 창부타령, 태평가 등이 통속민요에 속한다.

 

 

 

 

 

 Minyo, or a folk song, is a simple and honest song transmitted through commoners with their feelings, customs, and kindness. It was created, enjoyed, and transmitted by commoners. Anyone can create and sing minyo with no special talents or skills. There is no official way to enjoy creating and singing it. Minyo is peoples song that has been created and maintained based upon their anonymity.

There are about 200 songs of minyo, and most of them are songs for singing while working. These songs became necessary for rice farming, which required cooperation of many people. Minyo can be categorized into tosokminyo and tosongminnyo, according to the feature. It can also be categorized into Gyeonggi minyo for Seoul and Geyonggi, Seodo minyo for Hwanghae-do and Pyeongan-do, Dongbu minyo for Gyeognsang-do, Gangwon-do, and Hamgyeong-do, Namdo minyo for Jeolla-do, and Jeju-do minyo in terms of its musical features and region. As for another categorization for its function, minyo is divided into songs for work, ceremony, and entertainment. In terms of popularity, minyo can be songs for adults, women, and children.

*Tosokminyo ： It has a long history. It was sung in a limited area, featured as being simple, and transmitted through people living in that area. Songs that belong to tosokminyo are Farmers Song, Weeding Song, Song of Pulling a Fishing Net, Shovel Song, Dirge, and Ground Hardening Song

*Tongsokminyo : It has a relatively short history. It was sung in many areas. It is refined and exquisite. It is made by professional entertainers and sung by them. Through time, it dispersed among people. Songs that belong to tongsokminyo are Looking at Me, Hwacho Intersection, Nilliria, Changbu-taryeong, and Taepyeongga (Peace Song).
